Reading, spelling, and speaking are some of the most fundamental skills we teach at Hummingbird. Our school library is stocked with hundreds of excellent books, collected over the past 25 years. Children have access to these at any point in the day, and a teacher will often read a story to the class in order to aid a transitional period– like moving into lunch from quiet work time.

We teach spelling and reading through phonetics, which is a technique frequently used in Montessori curriculum. Phonetics help children recognize letters by the sounds they make which can be later applied to reading and 'sounding out words'.
