Reading, spelling, and speaking are some of the most fundamental skills we teach at Hummingbird Montessori Preschool. Our school library is stocked with hundreds of excellent books, collected over the past 25 years, and several times each week we bring in new books from our local public library. Children have access to these at any point in the day, and teachers regularly create structured story time to read to students as well.

We teach spelling and reading through phonetics at school, which is a technique frequently used in Montessori curriculum. Phonetics help children recognize letters by the sounds they make which can be later applied to reading and 'sounding out words'.
